Health Canada Approves Generic Ozempic (Semaglutide)
Health Canada has approved a generic version of Ozempic (semaglutide) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. As the generic becomes available across Canada, it may help reduce both employee out-of-pocket costs and overall drug plan costs.
Under Heartland Housing Foundationโs benefits plan, generic substitution applies. This means that once the generic version is widely available and pharmacists can substitute it, the drug plan will cover the cost of the generic medication.
If your physician determines that the brand-name Ozempic is medically necessary, you will need to complete a Sun Life Drug Exception form to request coverage for the brand-name medication.
Employees required to stay on the brand-name Ozempic should discuss this with their physician and complete the exception form at their next appointment to help avoid any disruption in coverage.
Please note:
- Prior Authorization will continue to be required for both Ozempic and the generic version.
- Employees already approved for Ozempic will automatically have access to the generic version.
- This change applies only to Ozempic for type 2 diabetes and does not apply to obesity medications such as Wegovy.
- Employees currently using Ozempic for type 2 diabetes will also receive additional information directly from Sun Life.
