What is considered functional independence?

Functional independence is defined as physically, mentally, and emotionally able to look after their own personal needs (with or without the assistance of community-based services) and includes:ย

  • Managing personal medicationsย
  • Maintaining appropriate personal hygieneย
  • Managing dietary needsย
  • Ability to maintain their suite in a safe, clean and tidy condition
  • Ability to live amicable with fellow residentsย
  • Willingness to follow rules outlined in a tenancy agreement

Our subsidized lodge wait-lists are based on several criteria used to determine an applicantโ€™s need. These criteria include:

  • Riskย (health and safety related)
  • Degree of independence
  • Housing needs
  • If the applicant is moving from a current Heartland building
  • If the applicant lives in the community or is moving to be closer to family
  • Income
    • this is based on the Lodge Assistance Program Income threshold and whether the applicant is eligible to receive Alberta Seniors Benefit.ย

The wait-list is the list of all applicant households in decreasing order, from highest priority (point score) to lowest priority (point score). The wait-list can change as a householdโ€™s situation changes or additional applicants join the list. Because the wait-list is always shifting, we cannot advise applicants how long they will wait for housing.ย

NOTE: Silver Birch Haven one and two-bedroom units manage a chronological waitlistย and is not based on priority scoring or income thresholds.
