Statutory Holidaysย

In Canada, we have both federal and provincial observed holidays. A statutory holiday (also known as "stats", "general" or "public" holiday) in Canada is legislated either by the federal government or the provincial or territorial government.ย

For example, Good Friday is a public holiday at a national level in Canada. In addition, there are optional holidays commonly observed but not legally mandated to observe. Alberta has a few optional holidays, and Easter Monday is one of those that Heartland Housing Foundation has chosen to observe.ย ย Those who qualify and work on a stat will be paid as such.ย ย

Heartland Housing Foundation (HHF) recognizes the following thirteen (13) general holidays: New Yearโ€™s Day, Alberta Family Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Heritage Day, Labour Day, Day of Truth and Reconciliation, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.ย

Spring Safety

Spring brings melting snow, wet walkways, changing temperatures, and more activity outdoors. A few quick checks can prevent slips, strains, and seasonal injuries, both on shift and after hours.

Slips, trips & falls:ย Slow down on wet entrances and parking lots, use handrails, and keep walkways clear of cords, clutter, and loose mats.
Footwear check:ย Swap winter boots for shoes with good tread, especially if you move between outdoors/indoors frequently.
Back & strain prevention:ย Spring clean smart: break loads into smaller trips, ask for help, and use carts/dollies when available. At home, lift with your legs and avoid twisting while carrying.
Vehicle readiness:ย Potholes and lingering ice happen. Leave extra stopping distance. Check wipers, washer fluid, and tire condition/pressure as temperatures swing.
Allergy & respiratory triggers:ย If youโ€™re sensitive to dust/pollen, keep needed medications handy and talk with your leader if symptoms may affect tasks.
Sun & dehydration:ย UV increases rapidly in spring. Use sunscreen for outdoor tasks, wear sunglasses, and keep a water bottle nearby, even on cooler days.
Ticks & bugs:ย When outdoors, cover exposed skin, use repellent as needed, and do a tick check after yard work or walks.
Report hazards early:ย If you notice a spill, damaged flooring, broken lighting, or an unsafe practice, report it right away so it can be corrected.
Quick goal:ย Take 2 minutes this week to spot one thing you can tidy, repair, or report. Small fixes make a big difference.ย
